'Dogs falter in four sets to Cowgirls

FRESNO, Calif. - Despite three Bulldogs with double-digit kill totals, the Fresno State volleyball team fell in four sets to Wyoming on Saturday at the Save Mart Center.
Fresno State (6-4, 6-4 MW) saw set scores of 22-25, 25-18, 24-26, 19-25 against Wyoming (8-4, 8-4 MW).
The 'Dogs were led by the trio of Amaria Kelley, Savanah Smith and Desiree Sukhov who combined for 45 of the 'Dogs 58 kills on the afternoon.
A night after tallying a career-high 22 kills in a five-set win, Kelley registered 18 on Saturday while hitting .227. Smith added 14, four blocks and three digs.
Sukhov notched her fifth double-double of the season finishing with 13 kills and 10 digs to go along with a service ace and an assist.
Amilya Thompson chipped in 39 assists and 10 digs for a double-double while Jocelyn Rodriguez added 11 digs.
How It Happened
With the 'Dogs leading the opening set 18-16 after a kill by Kelley, Wyoming reeled off a 9-4 run to close out the set taking it 25-22.
Fresno State quickly responded with its strongest set of the afternoon winning 25-18 closing out with a 10-4 run to break a close 15-14 set. A kill by Smith got the run going and five straight points from the 'Dogs saw the lead increase from 19-16 to 24-16 and was highlighted by three kills, an ace by Sukhov and an attack error before the final point for the 'Dogs was scored by on a kill by Grace Doyle.
The third set saw the Bulldogs lead by as many as five at 19-14, but the Cowgirls responded with six straight points to take a 20-19 lead on a service ace by Kaitlyn Gehler. A kill by Smith pulled the 'Dogs within set point at 24-22, but Wyoming squashed any hopes of the 'Dogs taking a 2-1 set lead with four straight points for a comeback 26-24 win.
The fourth set was dominated by the Cowgirls who took a 3-3 tie to 11-5 before extending it to seven at 20-13 and claimed a 25-19 win to split the series in Fresno.
Up next
The Bulldogs hit the road to take on Colorado State (5-5, 5-5 MW) next Friday and Saturday.
