Fresno State splits final day of the Bulldog Classic

FRESNO, Calif. – The Fresno State softball team split the final day of the Bulldog Classic, defeating UC Davis 3-1 before falling in a close game to Cal 7-5. The Bulldogs (12-6) had their 10-game win streak snapped with the loss to the Golden Bears.

Senior right-handed pitcher Hailey Dolcini chalked the win against UC Davis. She pitched a complete game with 11 strikeouts.. At the plate, sophomore Adrianna Noriega led the Bulldogs going 4-for-7 on the day with a double and two RBIs.

Game One – After being shutout by the Bulldogs yesterday, the Aggies struck first with a run in the third inning. Back-to-back singles and a hit by pitch loaded the bases. UCD capitalized on a throwing error by the catcher to bring in the first run of the game.

Fresno State took the lead with a three-run inning in the bottom of the fourth. Vanessa Hernandez drew a leadoff walk and advanced to second by a throwing error on the Aggies' catcher. Hernandez quickly moved over to third base after a fly ball was sent up to center field. Noriega brought in the tying run with a doubled down the left field line. Miranda Rohleder made it back-to-back doubles with a shot to center field, plating another run for the Bulldogs. Lexie Webb brought in the final run of the game with a two-out single.

Game Two – The game got started in the bottom of the first inning, as the Bulldogs got on the board first to take a 1-0 lead. Kaitlyn Jennings drew a leadoff walk and made her way around the bases, eventually scoring on a wild pitch.
Cal answered back in the fourth, tying the game with a sacrifice fly to left field.
The Bulldogs rattled off four hits in the bottom of the fifth to retake the lead 3-1. Fresno State opened the inning with back-to-back singles. Kelcey Carrasco laid down a sacrifice bunt, but skilled base-running from the three Bulldogs prevented an out from being made and loaded the bases. Hernandez smacked an RBI single, causing Cal to make a pitching change. Noriega kept a hot back, following with another RBI single. The Bulldogs brought in the final run of the inning with a sacrifice fly sent up by Rohleder.
The Bears answered back with six runs in the sixth tallying five hits including a grand slam, to take a 7-4 lead. Fresno State managed to plate another run in the bottom half of the inning but fell short of the comeback.
What's next – Fresno State will open Mountain West Play against San Jose State with a three-game series March 20-21.
