FRESNO, Calif. – The Fresno State softball team completed the series sweep of San Jose State with a 4-1 victory on Sunday afternoon in Margie Wright Diamond. The Bulldogs improve to 15-6 (3-0 MW) on the season.
Junior right-handed pitcher Hailey Dolcini pitched her second complete game of the weekend. She dished 14 strikeouts, one shy of her career-high, allowed three hits and didn't walk a single batter.
Adrianna Noriega has been solid at the plate throughout the series. The sophomore finished the final game going 2-for-3, four RBIs and a stolen base. Freshman Keahilele Mattson also went 2-for-3 at the plate and one stolen base.
How It Happened -- Dolcini set the tone by retiring 10 straight batters to start the game, holding SJSU without a run through four innings.
The Bulldogs struck first in the second inning, putting two runs on the board. Noriega got the offense going with a one-out single and used her speed to steal second base. Mattson plated the firsts run of the game with a triple to right field. Miranda Rohleder struck out swinging but an error by the Spartan catcher allowed her to reach base and for Mattson to take home plate.
After being held scoreless for 17 consecutive innings, SJSU scored its first run in the fifth with a solo shot over the left field wall. Dolcini had retired 34 consecutive batters in the series before giving up a hit.
The Bulldogs bounced back in the bottom half of the frame. Schuylar Broussard hit a leadoff double to center field, and Kaitlyn Jennings followed with a drawn walk to get two batters on base. Hayleigh Galvan laid down a sacrifice bunt, putting the runners in scoring position. The bases were loaded with another drawn walk. Noriega belted another clutch hit, sending a two-RBI single up the middle.
