'Dogs fall to Baylor in consolation round

WACO, Texas - The second-seeded Fresno State equestrian team fell 13-7 to the No. 4 seed Baylor in the consolation bracket of the 2021 Big 12 equestrian championship on Saturday. The Bulldogs suffered a semifinal loss to TCU on Friday to fall to the consolation bracket of the tournament.

Three of the four events on the day were decided by just one point, in favor of Baylor each time.

How it Happened
Fresno State and Baylor were closely matched in the Horsemanship to start the day as the Bears earned a 3-2 win to open competition. Kameron Thorn and Hannah Buijs earned their points for the 'Dogs. Thorn earned her point with a 149 (74.5, 74.5) against her Baylor opponent. The junior scored the highest two-score total by any Bulldog in the event. Buijs picked up her first point of the weekend on Saturday with a 145.5 (73.5-72).

Baylor gained momentum with the first jumping seat event, taking the fences 4-1 for its largest victory of the day. The Bulldog fences point was picked up by Cecily Hayes with a 135 (68, 67).

At the intermission, Baylor had a 7-3 lead.

The reining was another close matchup for the teams, but it was Baylor who would pull out with a 3-2 win. Fresno State picked up its points from Bailey Alexander and Paley Capachi. Alexander won the first point with a 136.5 (66.5, 70). Capachi remained undefeated in the tournament with a 137.5 (67, 70.5) ride.

The Bears earned their third 3-2 win of the day in the flat to complete its meet win against the 'Dogs. Fresno State's two points were earned by Hayes and Ana Bertozzi. Hayes swept her jumping seat rides with a 163 (86, 77) in the flat. Bertozzi picked up her flat point with a 158 (85, 73).

The Bulldogs will have some time off, and shift focus to nationals on April 14-17 in Waco, Texas. Team and event seedings will be announced at a later date.
