BERKELEY, Calif. - The Fresno State lacrosse team dropped its second meeting on the season with Cal at Memorial Stadium on Sunday afternoon. The Bulldogs are 1-7 on the season, and have one nonconference game remaining before opening Mountain Pacific Sports Federation play.
Four 'Dogs chipped in on the scoring efforts for Fresno State. The team was led by senior Megan Walaitis and junior Sydney Skalstad who netted three each. Sophomore Hennessey Evans scored two of her own, and freshman Logann Eldredge added one. Seven of the nine Bulldog goals had an assist along with it. Senior Lauren Kiszely was feeding the attack with four assists. Walaitis added two and Skalstad had one.
Senior goalkeeper Courtney Walburger had 12 saves in goal on Sunday. She faced 37 shots from the Cal offense. Evans led the team with three ground balls, and three different Bulldogs had the team's three caused turnovers against the Bears.
How it Happened
Cal scored in the opening minute of play, but Walaitis was able to even the score at one within 30 seconds of the first goal. The Bears responded with three unanswered before Skalstad netted her first of the game that would spark a three-goal run for the Bulldogs with 16:19 remaining in the half. Walaitis was responsible for the two additional goals in the run, completing her hat trick at the 12:48 mark and bringing Fresno State within one, 4-3.Â
The remainder of the first half went the way of Cal as the Bears scored five unanswered goals in a 11-minute span. Eldredge scored on the assist from Walaitis with 31 seconds remaining before the halftime buzzer. At the break, Cal led 8-5.Â
Fresno State outscored Cal 4-3 in the second half, but it was not enough to erase the lead the Bears created with their first half scoring run. The first two minutes of the period were scoreless until Evans scored on the assist from Kiszely. It would be another three minutes of clock time before Cal scored its first of the half to extend its lead to 9-6.Â
Evans scored again, but this time on a man-up opportunity to bring the 'Dogs back within two. The Bears scored two more, and it was a battle of the defenses for the following 12 minutes as neither team was able to score. Cal held a 11-7 lead that was cut to two as Skalstad scored two goals in the final three minutes of play.Â
