SAN JOSE – Fresno State opened the 2021 spring season with a bang on Saturday afternoon, scoring three goals in the first 40 minutes in its 3-1 win against San Jose State at the Spartan Soccer Complex. The Bulldogs spread the wealth with three different Bulldogs finding the score sheet.
Â
Fresno State got on the scoreboard in the 12th minute. Shantay Tamez lined up a free kick outside the box that caromed off the Spartan wall. The ricochet came right back to to the junior who popped the ball back into the box where it found Ele Avery who drilled a shot down the middle past Sylvia Sloss.
Â
The Bulldogs continued to put the pressure on the Spartans in the offensive third but it was SJSU that hit a counter attack with a through ball from their own end which found Evan House who slotted the ball past on an oncoming Valetina Vivas in the 29th minute.
Â
The 'Dogs wasted little time in responding, scoring within 20 seconds as four players touched the ball off the restart. Robyn McCarthy found a little space in the midfield, slid the ball to the right to Kassandra Ceja. On the freshman's second touch she slotted the ball into the path of Emma Chivers in the Spartan box where the senior calmly slid it past Sloss.
Â
Eight minutes later, Tamez lined up a corner and sent it toward the top of the 18-yard box. Bailee Kern managed to get a foot on it and pop the ball toward goal where Jordan Brown got on the end and deflected it off the underside of the crossbar to put the 'Dogs up 3-1.
Â
Fresno State finished the half with a 10-2 shot advantage, and a 6-0 edge in corner kicks, spending much of the opening 45 minutes in San Jose State's end.
Â
The Bulldogs took just one attempt on goal the remainder of the game, but the Spartans were only able to force two saves from Briana O'Dell during the second half as Fresno State picked up its first road win against the Spartans since 2013.
