FULLERTON, Calif. – The Fresno State softball team closed out a 3-0 weekend at the Judi Garman Classic defeating LMU 10-2 in six innings on Saturday afternoon. The Bulldogs (9-5) have won seven straight games.
Fresno State won its fourth game by run rule this season. The Bulldogs matched their season-high hits with 12. Junior Vanessa Hernandez had another stellar game at the plate, going 2-for-2 with two home runs, five RBIs and two drawn walks. Hernandez finishes the tournament 8-for-5 at the plate with three home runs and 10 RBIs.
Senior Hailey Dolcini pitched a complete game for the Bulldogs, notching five strikeouts. Dolcini rounds out the weekend with a 2-0 record, dishing 12 strikeouts.
"I'm proud to lead this group," head coach Linda Garza said. "We worked on the process all week. To walk away from this tournament 3-0 is hard. Our offense showed up against LMU today. Vanessa Hernandez had an outstanding weekend for us. It's a great day to be a Bulldog!"
How it happened – LMU got on the scoreboard after a single and a fielding error allowed a run to cross the plate. Fresno State countered with a run of its own in the bottom of the first inning after Kaitlyn Jennings got on base with a leadoff single and Kelcey Carrasco sent her home with another base hit.
The Bulldogs took the lead in the second inning after Alesia Denby hit a leadoff home run over the left field fence. Dolcini and the defense went to work, preventing the Lions from responding by retiring eight straight batters.
Fresno State's offense busted the game open in the fourth inning, after home runs from Jennings and Hernandez brought in five runs to take a commanding 7-1 lead over LMU.
