FRESNO, Calif. – The Fresno State softball team finished the first day of the Bulldog Classic with two run rule victories. The Bulldogs defeated Cal 8-0 (5 Inn.) in game one before besting UC Davis 8-0 (6 Inn.) in game two. Fresno State (11-5) continues its winning streak, making it nine straight.Â
"We played two great two games," head coach Linda Garza said. "We got on the board early in game one and Hailey Dolcini had another outstanding performance. In the nightcap, Dariana Orme did a solid job. The defense made some big-time plays and we had clutch hitting at the plate"Â
Fresno State was dominant in the circle through both games. Dolcini pitched her fourth shutout of the season, tying her season-high with 11 strikeouts. In game two, Orme chalked her first shutout of the season while only allowing one hit in the contest against the Aggies. The duo held the opposing teams to a .108 batting average.Â
At the plate, Sophomore Adrianna Noriega led the Bulldogs going 3-for-5 on the day with three hits and two RBIs. Freshman Keahilele Mattson has a big day for Fresno State, she went 2-for-5 with a home run and three RBIs.Â
Game One – Dolcini set the tone for the game retiring fivestraight batters by strikeout.Â
Fresno State started the game with hot bats, recording a four-run first inning. Kaitlin Jennings got on base after being hit by the pitch, and Kelcey Carrasco sent her home after smashing a double to center field. Vanessa Hernandez followed with a single to move Carrasco to third. The
Bulldogs capitalized by sending up a sacrifice fly to center field, bringing in another run. Mattson sent her third home run of the season over the center field fence to score the final two runs of the inning.Â
The Bulldogs were held scoreless in the second inning but bounced back in the third rattling off three runs. Hayleigh Galvan hit a leadoff single and Alesia Denby reached on an error to get two runners on. Mattson singled to left field, bringing two runs across the plate. Noriega singled to right field, and Mattson was able to reach home off a throwing error by the second baseman. Fresno State was up 7-0 through three innings.Â
Cal tried to get their offense going with back-to-back singles to open the fourth inning, but Dolcini and the defense held strong by retiring the next three batters.Â
Fresno State hung its eighth run on the scoreboard in thefifth inning. Carrasco reached base after being hit by the pitch. Hernandez moved the runner into scoring position with a single. The Bulldogs walked it off after heads up running on a throwing error brought in the final run.Â
Game Two – Carrasco logged the first hit of the game in the first inning with a two-out single through the left side, but was left stranded after the Aggies made a tough play at first base.Â
The Bulldogs scored three in the second to take the lead. Denby slapped a leadoff single to the pitcher and Miranda Rohleder reached on an error. With two runners on, Noriega sent a run across the plate with a single. Rohleder took advantage of a passed ball to score another run for the Bulldogs. The third and final run of the inning came off a sacrifice fly sent to left field by Schuylar Broussard.Â
Neither team was able to chalk a run through the next three innings.Â
In the bottom of the fifth, Denby drew a leadoff walk, and Mattson's groundout moved her second. Rohleder brought her home following with a single to left field. Noriega recorded a single of her own, putting another runner in scoring position. Broussard made it three straight singles for Fresno State, sending Rohleder home. Jennings belted a two-RBI double to left field to bust the game wide open. Galvan ended the game in walk-off fashion after her single brought in the eighth run.Â
