FRESNO, Calif. – Fresno State sent its three seniors out with a win on Saturday as the Bulldogs closed the season with a 3-1 win over San Jose State. The victory kept the Bulldogs' record unblemished at home on the year.
Fresno State finished the season at 6-3-1, second in the West Division.
How It Happened
Despite peppering San Jose State's goal during the opening half hour, Fresno State was unable to find the back of the net. Kassandra Ceja nearly end the deadlock just past the half-hour mark as Zoe Aguirre found herself caught out but Ceja's attempt on frame was stopped at the line by a Spartan defender.
The Bulldogs did not need to wait much longer though as Lorena Montanes one-timed a ball from the right channel into the penalty spot. It found the head of Katie Dohnel who popped the ball up and over Aguirre to give the 'Dogs a 1-0 lead in the 37th minute.
Nearly six minutes later, Ele Avery got loose down the left flank. The senior sent a ball into the box but it reached Kylie Lucero on the opposite side. The sophomore whipped the ball back into middle where Montanes ripped a shot under the crossbar from seven yards out to double the Bulldogs' advantage.
The 'Dogs added to their lead in the 69th minute. From her side of the half, Kayla King sent a ball down the right from side that was popped into the path of Jordan Brown by a Spartan defender. The junior found Avery cutting across the face of goal inside penalty box. The senior tapped the ball back toward the opposite post past Aguirre.
San Jose State go one back in the 89th minute as Karlee Pottorff hit a shot from the top of the box that found the inside of Briana O'Dell's right post.

On the importance of winning on Senior Day…
"It was very important. The seniors definitely deserved it and I felt like all of the contributions that they've made over the years came to fruition even in this short season. It felt like we just kept playing better and better so for them to all contribute significantly on the very last day, and for the team to rally around them and for us to get the win, it was the perfect way to finish it out."
