Sutherland wins El Macero Classic

EL MACERO, Calif. – Fresno State's Matthew Sutherland won the 2021 El Macero Classic to capture his first collegiate medalist honors.

Sutherland, who is originally from Sacramento, delivered three rounds in the sixties to secure the Bulldogs' second individual championship this spring, as Tommy Stephenson won the 2021 Bandon Dunes Championship in March.

Sutherland's victory is the 22nd individual title by a Bulldog since 1995.

No. 53-ranked Tommy Stephenson finished alone in third for his fifth Top 10 finish in his last six collegiate tournament appearances, which includes four of Fresno State's five events this spring.

As a team, Fresno State finished in fourth place - just three strokes back of UC Davis and Saint Mary's College - for the Bulldogs' best finish of the season. UCD prevailed on the first hole playoff to win the team title.
