Fresno State’s Tommy Stephenson enters the 2021 Mountain West Championship ranked 22nd in the nation in this week’s GolfStat.com collegiate individual rankings.
TUCSON, Ariz. – The Fresno State men's golf team is scheduled to compete in the 2021 Mountain West Championship on Friday and Saturday in Arizona.
Fresno State enters the championship event with two 2021 individual medalists – Tommy Stephenson (Bandon Dunes Championship) and Matthew Sutherland (El Macero Classic) – headlining a talented five-man team, which also includes Kevin Huff, Michael Cliff and Matthew Manganello.
Stephenson is currently ranked 22nd (GolfStat) and 49th (GolfWeek) nationally in this week's collegiate individual rankings.
For the 13th time in the last 14 championships, the 54-hole event will be contested on the Catalina Course at the OMNI Tucson National Golf Club, which will play as a par-72, 7,194-yard course.
The Bulldogs will be seeking their first-ever MW team championship in men's golf, and second individual MW title, as Fresno State's Trevor Clayton won the 2016 individual MW championship, which was also contested at Tucson National. Fresno State has won 14 conference team championships in program history with the most recent in 2008.
The 11-team field will play 36 holes on Friday and 18 holes in the final round on Saturday with live scoring available at GolfStat.com.
The OMNI Tucson National Golf Club is designed by Robert Van Hagge and Bruce Devlin with the Catalina Course being known for its magnificent views, traditional parkland-style layout and tree-lined fairways. Nestled in the foothills of the Santa Catalina Mountains, the course also includes eight sparkling lakes and 80 bunkers, while the 18th hole is considered to be one of the finest and most challenging finishing holes on the PGA Tour. Home to over 30 PGA events, including the prestigious Chrysler Classic of Tucson from 1997-2006, as well as several NCAA tournaments, the Tucson National has been selected as one of Golf Digest magazine's "75 Best Golf Resorts in North America."
