Matilde Magrini, a native of Pesaro, Italy, is set to join the Fresno State’s women’s tennis program this fall.
FRESNO, Calif. – Matilde Magrini has signed a grant-in-aid agreement to play for the Fresno State women's tennis program starting in the 2021-22 season, Fresno State head coach Denise Dy officially announced on Friday.
Magrini, a native of Pesaro, Italy, will enter this fall with four seasons of eligibility to play for Fresno State.
"We are very excited for Matilde to be joining our Bulldog Family," Dy said. "She is a great addition to our program because of her passion for tennis and eagerness to get better. She has shown a lot of fire since committing to Fresno State. We're looking forward to her presence this fall!"
Magrini ranks in the top 15 in Italy for juniors with a national rating of 2.4. She earned her first international point in the W15K in Cairo this past April and has won several national opens in Italy.
"I am really happy and excited at the same time to sign with Fresno State," Magrini said. "I am ready and I can't wait to give my best for the university. I had a great feeling immediately with the coaches and I can't wait to start the adventure with all of the team."
The Fresno State women's tennis program has a strong winning tradition – especially in the last 30 years – and has produced All-Americans and conference champions.
In 2021, the Bulldogs wrote another impressive chapter with a second-place finish (15-5, 8-2 Mountain West) in a full 10-match conference schedule, which featured Dy's leadership and the rise of Daila Ahmed, who earned 2021 Mountain West Player of the Year honors.
As a team, Fresno State won 11 of its last 13 matches and was a perfect 5-0 in neutral site contests.
In singles, Fresno State finished 69-32 overall (31-13 in MW play), which included a 14-4 record at No. 1 singles, while in doubles, the Bulldogs were 32-20 overall, which included a 15-3 record at No. 1 doubles.
Dy, who played collegiately at Washington and coached at Arizona, Washington and Iowa, is the Bulldogs' 11th head coach and earned the third-best opening season (15-5, .750) in program history in her first season at Fresno State.
