Bulldogs post shutout in Bakersfield

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – In a match that had triple digits at the start, a hydration break midway through the opening half saw Fresno State seize control against CSU Bakersfield after the stoppage and head home with a 1-0 win on Saturday night. The Bulldogs controlled play and outshot the Roadrunners 14-2 during the final 63 minutes of the contest.
Senior Jordan Brown's low shot across the face of goal in the 34th minute proved to be the difference in Fresno State's lone match of the weekend.
How It Happened
While Fresno State came alive following a predetermined water break in the opening half, the Bulldogs first opportunity came in the 16th minute. Earning her first start of the season, Sam Tristan teed up an attempt for Robyn McCarthy from 12 yards out that stuck a Bakersfield defender who jumped in the path at the last second.
Seven minutes later, Brown entered the match, and immediately brought a burst of energy, as Fresno State's pressure on Bakersfield's backline ramped up. The senior forced a save out of CSUB's Flavia Burrell in the 28th minute. A trio of shots then came from the 'Dogs in the ensuing six minutes. That third attempt, a shot from Chais Wright just inside the 18-yard box was blocked but caromed toward the center, was deflected by Sam Tristan to the right to Brown. The striker shifted to her left, created a little space, and ripped a low shot to the near post past Burrell.
The pressure continued through the end of the half as the Bulldogs finished with seven shots, a goal, and forced three saves in the final 18 minutes.
Looking to double their advantage in the 54th minute, Katie Dohnel slid a 30-yard pass into the path of Bailee Kern at the top of the Roadrunnes' penalty box, but a last-ditch slide tackle thwarted a 1-on-1 chance with the keeper for the Bulldog midfielder. Seven minutes later, Dohnel was nearly on the receiving end of a clever play along the end line from Kassandra Ceja to set up a tap in but Ceja's backheel to get out of pressure slid just out of play.
Fresno State had a pair of chances to all but put the game away with 10 minutes to go. A perfect buildup through the defensive third down the sideline led to Kern getting off a sliding effort on a cross inside the six but Burrell came up with her fifth save of the night. Just under a minute later, Tristan side stepped a defender and stuck a shot from 20 yards out that beat Burrell but found the left post.
For nearly 50 minutes during the game, the Bulldogs' defense held the Roadrunners without a shot.
