Triple-double paces 'Dogs in win

FRESNO, Calif. – Recording her second triple double of the season, and a program record 13 assists, Haley Cavinder's all-around game helped Fresno State's offense roll up 87 points in an 87-74 win over San Jose State on Saturday at the Save Mart Center. The point guard finished with 17 points, 13 rebounds and 13 assists.
The 13 assists and zero turnovers by the junior were crucial in opening up the Bulldogs' offense. It helped teammates like Hanna Cavinder go for a game-high 24 points, Wytalla Motta pile up 19 points and Amiee Book come off the bench and drop 12 points on 4-of-4 from deep.
How It Happened
As expected with rivals playing for the second time three days, the game was nip-and-tuck throughout with both teams shooting near 50 percent from the field.
With the Bulldogs clinging to a 52-51 lead with less than a second remaining in the third period, Hanna Cavinder was fouled on 3-point attempt. The junior sank all three free throws and put the 'Dogs up four heading into the fourth. Amiee Book knocked down a triple to start the final period. Then came up with a steal that led to a runout and layup for Hanna.
Just over 30 seconds later, Haley Cavinder was fouled on a drive to the bucket by Deja Ross, a call the Spartan didn't agree with and was subsequently whistled for a technical. Haley went 4-of-4 from the line in the sequence. In 1:05 of game time, Fresno State turned a one-point game into a double-digit cushion with a 12-0 run.
Fresno State led by as much as 18 with 4:08 remaining in the game (79-61). Fresno State scored 32 in the final period behind 71.4 percent shooting (10-of-14) and a perfect 10-of-10 from the charity stripe.

The Bulldogs head to Colorado Springs, Colo. for a Wednesday night matchup with Air Force at the USAF Academy. Tipoff is slated for 5:30 p.m. PT.

- Fresno State scored 80-plus points for third time this year. The 87 points was its second-highest, one back of the 88 the 'Dogs scored against Stanislaus State.
- Fresno State shot at least 50 percent for the third time this season and second time in as many games, connecting at a 50.8 percent clip.
- The Bulldogs shot at least 40 percent from 3 for the six time since the start of December (8-of-20).
- The 'Dogs dished out a season-high 21 assists.
- Fresno State has won its last three games, its longest win streak of the season.
- The Bulldogs are 3-1 in conference play.
- The 'Dogs have won their last five games against San Jose State.
- Haley Cavinder recorded her second career triple-double, and second in three months, with 17 points, 13 rebounds and 13 assists.
- She joins Bego Faz Davalos as the only Bulldogs to record two triple-doubles in a career.
- Haley is the first Bulldog to post two triple-doubles in a single season.
- Haley is tied for the nation's lead in triple-doubles with Iowa's Caitlin Clark.
- Haley's 13 assists broke Fresno State's program record, and she did it with zero turnovers. The pervious record of 12 had been done multiple times, last coming on Feb. 21, 1998 by Jessie Farias.
- Hanna Cavinder scored a game-high 24 points, her third 20-point game of the season.
- Hanna was 10-of-11 from the free throw line. Both matched her career highs set against UC Davis on Nov. 12, 2019.
- Wytalla Motta shot 9-of-13 for the second straight game, scoring 19 points.
- Prior to Dec. 31, Motta had not scored more than 13 points in a game. She has since score 17, 23 and 19.
- Motta has scored in double figures six times this season.
- Amiee Book came off the bench to score 12 points, going 4-of-4 from 3. It was her first time being perfect this season from 3.
- Book's four 3-pointers were one shy of her season high which she did in the season opener at Utah Valley.
