STANFORD, Calif. – The Fresno State softball stumbled in its opening game of the 2022 Demarini Invitational, falling to Cal 6-0 on Friday afternoon.
Sophomore right-handed pitcher Cassidy West tied her season-high with six strikeouts. Junior Alesia Denby recorded the Bulldogs' lone hit in the contest.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Bears sent the 'Dogs down in order to start the game. Cal loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the frame, but West dished back-to-back strikeouts to get Fresno State out of a jam.
Cal retired the next trio of Bulldogs with three strikeouts, and West returned the favor with three strikeouts to make it 0-0 after two innings.
Denby recorded Fresno State's first hit of the game in the top of the third with a two-out single up the middle, but a foul territory fly out would end the inning for the 'Dogs.
The Bears reached base on an error to start the bottom of the third inning, and a double from the following batter would put two runners on base. Cal hit a three-run home run to take a 3-0 lead. The 'Dogs finished the inning with a strikeout and a groundout to limit the damage. The Bears would tacked on one more run in the next frame.
Cal made it a six-run game after scoring two runs on two hits in the fifth inning.
Fresno State put two runners on base to start the sixth inning, but a double play made it two outs. Keahilele Mattson drew a walk to put another runner on base, but Cal made the play in center field for the final out.
The Bulldogs were unable to get a runner on base in the seventh, and the Bears came away with the win 6-0.
