'Dogs defeat Tigers, 5-3

FRESNO, Calif. – The Fresno State softball team defeated Pacific 5-2 on Wednesday night at Margie Wright Diamond.
The Bulldogs tied their season-high with 12 hits in the contest. Senior Kacey Hvitved had a season-high three hits and tallied one RBI. Fellow senior Vanessa M. Hernandez recorded two hits and team-high two RBIs at the plate.
Senior right-hander Casey Dixon pitched a complete game, earning her third win. Dixon leads the bullpen in wins this season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Fresno State had a strong start sending the first three Pacific batters down in order. Then the 'Dogs put up logged back-to-back base hits in the bottom of the frame but were unable to capitalize.
The Tigers struck first in the top of the second. Pacific put two runners on base with singles, and both runners were sent home after an error by the Bulldogs' second baseman.
Fresno State responded in the bottom of the inning with a leadoff solo shot from Mackenna Steele, logging her first career home run as a Bulldog. Alesia Denby fed off the momentum by sending a single to the outfield. With one runner on, Emery Nielson drew a two-out walk. Alana Cobb-Adams came in clutch for the 'Dogs with a two-out RBI single to tie the game 2-2.
Pacific threatened to retake the lead in the fourth, tallying two hits to put two runners on, Denby made the play at shortstop to strand the two Tigers.
The Bulldogs took the lead in the bottom of the fifth. Cobb-Adams hit a leadoff single to get the offense going, recording her second base hit of the night. Hernandez had a solid at-bat, drawing a one-out walk to get another runner on. Hvitved once again came in clutch for the 'Dogs, she belted an RBI single deep into left field for the go-ahead run.
Dixon and defense retired the batters in order to start the sixth, letting the offense get back to work. Avery Lawley hit a leadoff single, and Nielson followed with a well-executed bunt to get on base. Hernandez hit a two-RBI single through the right side to give the 'Dogs a 5-2 lead going into the final frame.
The Tigers were able to get one hit in the seventh, but the 'Dogs got the outs to secure the victory.
