FRESNO, Calif. – The Fresno State softball team was bested in an extra-inning heart breaker on Friday night at Margie Wright Diamond, falling to San Diego State 5-1 in the series opener.
The Bulldogs were outhit 9-4 in the contest. Sophomore Keahilele Mattson has a team-high two hits and one RBI on the night. Three Bulldogs saw time in the circle to log a combined three strikeouts.
HOW IT HAPPENED
SDSU capitalized on an error by the second baseman to get a runner on, but catcher Avery Lawley and shortstop Alesia Denby made the play throw out the runner attempting to steal for the first out. The Aztecs were able to get another runner on due to an error, but the defense made back-to-back plays to end the inning and strand the runners.
The Bulldogs were retired in order to keep the game scoreless after the first inning.
SDSU took a 1-0 lead in the next inning with a two-out solo shot to right field. In the bottom of the second, Lawley belted a leadoff single to get on base. Mattson came in clutch with a two-out RBI single in the gap, tying the game 1-1.
Both teams retired the next nine opposing batters to send the game into extra innings.
The Aztecs rallied in the top of the eighth, plating four runs off five hits, to retake the lead. The Bulldogs put two runners on base, but were unable to get a rally going for the comeback.
SDSU took the first game of the series 5-1.
