No. 65 Fresno State rallied in singles to defeat Air Force and remain unbeaten in MW play in 2022.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The No. 65-ranked Fresno State women's tennis team defeated the Air Force Falcons 4-2 on Friday at the McKinnon Family Tennis Stadium in Albuquerque, N.M.

Fresno State (17-3, 7-0 Mountain West) remains unbeaten in conference play and in sole possession of first place in the MW. The win extends the Bulldogs' winning streak to nine straight victories.

How it happened: After battling, but coming up short in doubles, Fresno State responded by taking four first sets to open singles and then followed that up by closing out straight set victories by Carlotta Nonnis Marzano and Carolina Piferi for a 2-1 lead on the Falcons.

Air Force evened the match at 2-2 with a win at the No. 2 slot.

Cristina Flaquer then completed a three-set comeback at No. 3 singles, which set the stage for A.C. Hummel to clinch at No. 4 singles in straight sets.

Team Notes:

No. 65 Fresno State has now won its last nine matches and 10 of its last 11 overall.
In singles, Fresno State's rotation improved to a combined 70-26 (.729) overall with more wins than losses at each slot.
Fresno State improved to 32-8 overall (15-2 in MW matches) in head coach Denise Dy's two seasons coaching the Bulldogs.
For the eighth consecutive week, the Fresno State women's tennis team is ranked nationally (No. 65) in the ITA Collegiate Tennis Rankings sponsored by Tennis-Point, the organization announced on Wednesday. This season, Fresno State has been ranked as high as No. 51 nationally.

Fresno State's Carolina Piferi is now on a 12-match singles winning streak (6-0 in MW play) with a 14-1 singles record this season (11-0 at No. 6 singles). Piferi has also played up at No. 4 singles (1-0) and No. 5 singles (2-1).
