'Dogs even series against Spartans

SAN JOSE, Calif. – The Fresno State softball team evened the series against San Jose State with a 5-1 win on Saturday afternoon at the Spartan Softball Complex.
The Bulldogs (7-26, 1-7 MW) earned their first win of Mountain West play, outhitting the Spartans 7-5. Senior Vanessa M. Hernandez led Fresno State at the plate going 3-for-4 with two extra-base hits and two RBIs. In the circle, Marley Hanlon and Cassidy West split time for the 'Dogs. West earned her second win of the season after throwing 4.2 innings and dishing two strikeouts.
HOW IT HAPPENED
After a scoreless first inning, Hernandez hit a leadoff double to start the top of the second. Avery Lawley sent an RBI single down the left-field line to plate the first run of the game.
The Bulldogs extended their lead in the next inning. Kacey Hvitved drew a one-out walk to get on base, and Keahilele Mattson moved her to third with a single down the right-field line. Alesia Denby brought Hvitved across home plate with a sacrifice fly to center field. The Spartans made it a one-run game in the bottom of the inning, scoring one run on two hits.
Fresno State held SJSU without a run for the next three innings to take a 2-1 lead into the seventh. Alyssa Orr opened the final inning with a leadoff single to right field and was moved into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt laid down by Hvitved. Denby drew a two-out walk to keep the inning going. Hernandez came in clutch with a two-out two-RBI triple to the center-field wall to give the 'Dogs a 5-1 advantage.
West and the defense sent the Spartans down in order to secure the victory and even the series.
