'Dogs secure first MW series win

SAN JOSE, Calif. – The Fresno State softball team defeated San Jose State 4-2 in the weekend finale to win the series.
The Bulldogs (8-26, 2-7 MW) earn their first series win of Mountain West play. Fresno State out-hit SJSU 8-7 in the contest. Sophomore Avery Lawley led the 'Dogs at the plate going 2-for-3 with one RBI. Right-handed pitcher Cassidy West earned her second win of the weekend. West pitched 6.0 innings and dished four strikeouts.
HOW IT HAPPENEDÂ
SJSU took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning off four drawn walks and two hits. Fresno State responded in the next frame with a two-out rally. Lawley got the rally started with a single to left field, and Bailey Williams followed with another base hit to plate the first run for the 'Dogs. Emery Nielson continued the rally after reaching base on a bunt single. Mackenna Steele pinch-hit in the ninth spot and belted a two-out RBI single to tie the game. Alyssa Orr capped the rally with another RBI single for the lead.
Fresno State put up an insurance run in the top of the fifth inning. Keahilele Mattson drew a leadoff walk. The next two Bulldogs were retired, but Lawley belted another two-out single to bring in the fourth run.
West and the defense retired six out of the next seven batters to take the 4-2 lead into the bottom of the seventh. The Spartans attempted a two-out rally with back-to-back singles. Vanessa M. Hernandez ended the game by making the play on a foul fly.
