'Dogs split doubleheader

FRESNO, Calif. – The Fresno State softball team split the midweek doubleheader with Saint Mary's on Tuesday at Margie Wright Diamond. The Bulldogs defeated the Gaels 2-0 in the first game before falling 6-0 in the second game.
The Bulldogs (9-29, 2-7 MW) have won three out of their last four games.
GAME 1 – Bailey Williams led the Bulldogs at the plate going 1-for-2 with two RBIs. In the circle, Casey Dixon and Cassidy West split time. West picked up her third straight win after pitching 4.2 innings and dishing three strikeouts.
Both teams were held scoreless through five innings. The Bulldogs' offense broke through in the bottom of the sixth inning. Alesia Denby drew a one-out walk and she was moved into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt. Avery Lawley put runners on the corners for the 'Dogs with a two-out single. Williams brought in the runs with a triple down the right-field line, giving Fresno State a 2-0 lead heading into the final inning.
West and the defense sent the batters down in order to secure the Bulldogs' third straight win.
GAME 2 – Saint Mary's out-hit Fresno State 8-4 in the second game of the doubleheader.
Emery Nielson had a team-high two hits. Left-handed pitcher Marley Hanlon chalked the start and West entered in relief. The duo posted a combined three strikeouts.
The Gaels came out with hot bats, plating four runs on five hits in the opening frame. After being sent down in order in the second, they went back to work in the third inning. Saint Mary's scored its final run on two drawn walks and one hit.
The Bulldogs tried to get their offense going in the bottom of the fifth, opening the inning with back-to-back singles. The Gaels followed the two hits with three quick outs to keep the lead.
Saint Mary's allowed two more runners to get on base in the final two innings but managed to pull off the shutout over Fresno State in the second game of the day.
