'Dogs drop five-set heartbreaker to Wolf Pack

FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State volleyball team opened Mountain West play on Thursday night falling in five sets to Nevada at the Save Mart Center.
Fresno State (6-7, 0-1 MW) and Nevada (7-5, 1-0 MW) saw sets, 25-20, 22-25, 25-22, 22-25, 12-15 with the Bulldogs edging the Wolf Pack in hitting percentage, kills, assists, digs and blocks, but fell in a hard-fought fifth set.
How It Happened
The Wolf Pack jumped out a quick 6-0 lead in the opening set, but the 'Dogs rallied back with a 16-10 run to tie the set at 16. After an attack error by Nevada tied the set at 19, the Bulldogs closed the set on a 6-1 run finishing out the set with back-to-back kills from Addison Haluska.
After Nevada led from start to finish in the second set, the Bulldogs broke open an 8-8 tie in the third set with a 6-0 run. The Wolf Pack rallied back with a 9-3 run to tie the set at 17. An attack error and kills by Rud and Preslee Lillard put the 'Dogs up three and after the Wolf Pack cut the Bulldogs' lead to two at 23-21, a service error and kill by Lauren Sabbatini sealed the set win for the 'Dogs.
With the Wolf Pack winning the fourth set to force a fifth and deciding set, the Bulldogs jumped out to a 7-6 lead after a kill by Sabbatini. A 4-0 run by Nevada gave the visitors back a three-point lead and after a solo block by Grace Doyle got the 'Dogs back within one at 12-11, the Wolf Pack nabbed three of the final four points for the win.

The Bulldogs continue their three-match homestand on Saturday taking on San Jose State (7-4, 1-0 MW) at 1 p.m. for Green V Day.

- Ella Rud led the 'Dogs in kills for the eighth time this season while reaching double figure kills for the ninth time.
- Rud notched her sixth double-double of the season setting a new season best with a team-high 17 digs.
- Sabbatini registered a career-best .571 hitting percentage adding eight kills, nine digs and three service aces.
