FRESNO, Calif. - Heading to five sets for the second straight match, the Fresno State volleyball team dropped a hard-fought five-set battle to San Jose State on Saturday at the Save Mart Center.
Fresno State (6-8, 0-2 MW) jumped out to a 2-0 set lead, but San Jose State (8-4, 2-0 MW) battled back to claim the final three sets and complete the reverse sweep.Â
How It Happened
Winning the first two sets of the match, the Bulldogs got off to a hot start taking the back-and-forth opening set, 29-27. Jumping out to a 19-14 lead after block assists from Kasey Purry and Addison Haluska, the Spartans battled back to tie the set at 21. With ties in the set at 22, 23, 24, 25, 26 & 27, the 'Dogs found a way to win the final two points getting a service ace from Ella Rud and a kill by Preslee Lillard.
The second set saw the 'Dogs get out to a 5-1 lead after an ace by Lauren Sabbatini. Extending their lead to 20-8 after block assists from Haluska and Grace Doyle, the Bulldogs closed out the set with kills by Purry and Lillard and one more tag team block from that duo for the dominant 25-12 win.
The Spartans answered back with wins in the third and fourth sets to force a fifth and deciding set. A solo block by Purry tied the set at six apiece, but a 9-2 run for San Jose State closed out the set and gave the visitors a 15-8 win in the fifth set.
