KINGSBURG, Calif. – The Fresno State men's golf team opened up the 2022-23 season with a third-place finish this week at the 59th annual Nick Watney Invitational. The Bulldogs finished the two days shooting 22-under par 830 after a low round of 10-under par 275 on Tuesday at Kings River Golf and Country Club.
"It was a nice start to the season," Fresno State head coach Chad Spencer said. "Really solid play from Joseph and Suthy this week. We're looking forward to competing at Nevada in a couple weeks."
Playing in the final group, Matthew Sutherland shot a 4-under par 67 to finish fourth at 11-under for the week. The junior opened the day with three birdies in his first four holes and ended the week with 15.
Sutherland, like teammate Joseph Lloyd, feasted on the Par 5's as both were 7-under combined during the three rounds. Lloyd put together his third straight round in the 60's, finishing the third round with a 68 to place sixth overall at 8-under par.
Matthew Maganello recovered from a tough first day to get back to even par for the week after firing a 4-under par 67 during Tuesday's final round. The junior was clean on the back nine while sinking a trio of birdies.
