Bulldogs fall in five-set battle to San Francisco

FRESNO, Calif. - Taken to a fifth set for the second time this season, the 'Dogs dropped a five-set heartbreaker to San Francisco on Saturday afternoon at the Save Mart Center to wrap up the Fresno State Invitational presented by Axis Hotel Group.
Fresno State (3-3) was led by freshman middle blocker Addison Haluska who notched a team-leading 17 kills while hitting .438 and added five blocks and two digs.
Junior setter Hannah Waters continued her great start to the season notching her fifth double-double of the season tallying 44 assists and 13 digs.
How It Happened
The Dons took the opening set by a narrow 25-23 margin as USF was able to secure five of the set's final eight points for the win. A kill by Grace Doyle brought the 'Dogs back within one at 24-23, but a service error by the Bulldogs gave the opening set to USF.
The Bulldogs bounced back in the second set to tie that match at one set apiece scoring the final three points of the set using a block assist, a USF attack error and a kill by Haluska for a 26-24 win.
After the Dons took a two sets to one lead with a 25-23 win in the third set, the 'Dogs bounced back in the fourth set jumping out to a 14-9 lead after blocks from Haluska and Kasey Purry. A 5-1 run by the Dons cut the 'Dogs lead down to one at 15-14 and USF briefly went ahead with a 21-20 lead before the Bulldogs scored five of the final six points of the set. A kill by Haluska tied the set at 21 and a kill by Olivia Keller put the 'Dogs up 23-22 which was followed by an ace from Sydney Gazzaniga and block assists from Haluska & Ella Rud.
Heading to a fifth set, blocks from Doyle & Keller got the 'Dogs within one at 5-4 and a service ace from Rud kept the Bulldogs within one at 9-8 that forced a USF timeout. Block assists from Doyle & Haluska pushed Fresno State in front, 11-10, but five of the final seven points of the set were claimed by the Dons who closed out the match with a kill.
