SAN DIEGO – The Fresno State softball team was edged 4-3 on the road by the San Diego State Aztecs on Saturday at SDSU Softball Stadium.
In the last six games, Fresno State (11-17, 1-1 Mountain West) is 3-3, with all three of the losses coming by a single run.
San Diego State (17-10, 2-3 MW)Â entered the series ranked No. 38 nationally in RPI and Sunday's series finale will now determine the weekend series between the last two conference champions.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Keahilele Mattson connected on a two-out, two-run single in the second to give the Bulldogs an early 2-0 lead on the Aztecs, who responded with a two-run homer off the bat of AJ Murphy in the bottom half of the inning.
Both teams then scored once in the third and it was predominately a pitcher's duel the rest of the way.
Taylor Gilmore earned her fourth start of the season (25th overall appearance) and kept the Aztecs' potent offense at bay for much of the game.
Gilmore delivered 6.1 solid innings and struck out four batters with no walks before Shelbi Denman came in after SDSU's Jade Ignacio doubled with one out in the seventh. SDSU walked off with the win by virtue of Makena Brocki's two-out RBI double that ended the contest.
