LAS VEGAS – The Fresno State softball team lost 8-0 to the UNLV Rebels on Thursday night at Jim Rogers Field at Eller Media Stadium.
Fresno State (15-20, 4-3 Mountain West) couldn't contain UNLV (18-17, 4-6 MW), who took advantage of its offensive opportunities in handing the Bulldogs their first run-rule loss of the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
After a relatively quiet start to the game, UNLV shortstop Maddie Schmidt tripled and designated player Ariana Martinez hit a two-out, two-run homer to give the Rebels a 2-0 lead in the third inning.
UNLV added five more in the fourth frame as Taylor Gilmore (7-5) tossed the first 3.2 innings of the contest before Shelbi Denman came on in relief.
In the fifth, the Rebels ended the game on a sacrifice fly off the bat of catcher Hailey Schmaltz.
UNLV pitcher Alanna Thiede threw her first career no-hitter in the run-rule victory for the Rebels.
