LAS VEGAS – The Fresno State softball team was edged 5-4 by the UNLV Rebels on Friday at Jim Rogers Field at Eller Media Stadium.
The loss is the second straight for Fresno State (15-21, 4-4 Mountain West), who will play its series finale in Las Vegas against UNLV (19-17, 5-6 MW) on Saturday at 12 p.m. PT.
HOW IT HAPPENED
UNLV got the scoring started with four runs in the third, courtesy of back-to-back RBI doubles, a RBI groundout and a RBI single by the Rebels' offense.
The Bulldogs' Alesia Denby walked to lead off the fourth and later slid across home plate on a hard-hit line drive into center field for a sacrifice fly by freshman Jamie Hicks to cut Fresno State's deficit to 4-1.
After UNLV added a run, Abby Doughty began the fifth with a single, which was followed by a Keahilele Mattson walk. Doughty sprinted and dove headfirst into home plate for the Bulldogs' second run of the game and Denby drove in Mattson on a RBI single through the left side to pull within two.
In the sixth, Fresno State's Bella Rocco delivered a two-out, run-scoring triple to trim UNLV's lead to 5-4.
Defensively, Hicks ended the bottom of the sixth when she snagged a laser down the line at first base.
Â
Trailing by a run entering the seventh, Fresno State couldn't mount a final rally before falling by the single run.
