RIVERSIDE, Calif. - For the second time this season, Fresno State earned a 1-1 draw after allowing the opening goal. Adriana Maldonado scored the equalizer in the 39th minute as the Bulldogs drew with UC Riverside on Thursday evening.
HOW IT HAPPENED
UC Riverside had the first big chance of the match in the 16th minute as a high screamer forced Valentina Vivas to make a leaping punch over the bar. Nine minutes later, Cassia Souza did the same to the Bulldogs, punching over an attempt from Lizbeth "Yaya" De Loera which was headed for the top corner.
Â
The Highlanders scored the match's opening goal in the 30th minute. A deep corner to Spenser Gonzales was headed back across the face of goal, just outside the reach of a diving Vivas.
Fresno State began to mount pressure late in the half and it paid off in the 39th minute. Ciara Wilson flicked a cross in from the right wing that Adriana Maldonado got her head onto to nod it past Souza. Minutes before half, Tiana Beavers struck one from range but the attempt was denied.
Opportunities were limited in the final 45 minutes, with each team earning just one shot. Wilson had the Bulldogs' chance but her dipping attempt was lifted just over the crossbar.
NOTES
The Bulldogs will remain in Riverside, playing Cal Baptist on Sunday. Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. PT at CBU Soccer Stadium.
