'Dogs close weekend with a win over Mustangs

FRESNO, Calif.- Fresno State women's tennis team split even on the set of weekend matches against No. 42 BYU and Cal Poly, 1-1. 
HOW IT HAPPENED
Bulldogs started the weekend hosting the BYU cougars. Bulldogs saw their double-point streak end with Cougars pairs Li/Wheatley and Huang/Sawhney (6-0, 6-3). No. 71 Bobo Huang def. Matilde Magrini on No.1, 6-0. 6-3. Carolina Piferi earns the Bulldogs their first point of the match defeating Sawhney, 6-3, 6-2. Piferi sits 7-1 in singles matches with a win over BYU. Bulldogs final point came from Mariya Vyshkina defeating Kovick, 6-3, 7-5.
Cal Poly Mustangs put a tough doubles line up with court 2 playing in a tight match up with Eliza Dunbar and Piferi at 5-4 while court three saw a Mustang lead of 5-2. Piferi and Dunbar kept the Bulldogs' chances alive securing the win leaving it up to court three. Mustangs get the best of Charlotte Gisclon and Hannah Pieper.Â

Bulldogs' took the first two singles points against the Mustangs. No. 4 Hannah Pieper def. Buntrock, 6-1, 6-1. Piferi followed close behind at No. 1 to defeat D. Dunkle in close sets 6-3, 6-4. Piferi extends her win streak to 3-0 at No. 1 singles and 8-1 in singles this season. Cal Poly's P. Dunkle would get the best of the tiebreaker in the second set, 7(6)-6 against Misaki Kobayashi on court No. 2. Kobayashi came back in the third allowing Dunkle to only one game, 6-1. LaMette gave the Mustangs their second point and first singles defeating Mariya Vyshkina, 5-7, 6-4, 6-3. Â
No. 6 Eliza Dunbar was the final match on the courts and came back from behind to win the next set and force a third. In the third Dunbar worked down from 1-5 to 4-5, but fell to Mosse in the last game.
UP NEXT: 'Dogs are back on the road to face Washington State and Gonzaga on Mar. 3-4. Before coming back home to open conference play against Utah State on Mar. 17.
