MALIBU, Calif. – Fresno State closed nonconference play with a 5-0 defeat to No. 19 Pepperdine at Tari Frahm Rokus Field on Friday afternoon. It was just the Bulldogs' second loss of the year.
Fresno State was outshot 11-2 with a 7-1 differential in shots on target.
HOW IT HAPPENED
With little opportunities early for both teams, the Bulldogs got one in the 26th minute. On a counter attack, Ciara Wilson got down the line and cut in past her defender on the right but her attempt on goal was just over the crossbar. Two minutes later, Sam Paepen had an attempt deflected that had eyes for the far post. Waves goalkeeper Jillian Medvecky laid out to her left to knock it out across the end line.
Pepperdine struck on its first shot on goal of the afternoon. In the 39th minute Ava Verplancke snuck a through ball into the box that Kyra Murphy ran on to and put past Ashton Conley.
With less than 90 seconds left in the half, the Waves doubled their advantage. Another quick strike through the defense led to a look from Tabitha LaParl. Conley made a diving stop, but Erin Zeile knocked in the rebound.
Pepperdine tacked on three more goals during the second half, holding Fresno State without a shot.
