Second-half rally falls short against UC San Diego
11/12/2025 10:52:00 PM | Men's Basketball
FRESNO, Calif. – The Fresno State men's basketball team dropped a nail-biter to UC San Diego on Wednesday night at the Save Mart Center, 78-73.
The Bulldogs outscored the Tritons 43–36 in the second half but were unable to overcome a slow start and UCSD's hot shooting from the perimeter. The Tritons hit 12 three-pointers and held off Fresno State's late push to remain unbeaten on the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
UC San Diego set the tone early, jumping out to a 20–10 lead midway through the first half behind strong outside shooting from Leo Beath and Aidan Burke. The Tritons made six threes in the opening period and shot 49 percent overall, while Fresno State struggled to find its rhythm offensively, committing 10 turnovers before halftime.
Jac Mani provided a spark off the bench for the Bulldogs, scoring nine first-half points and helping Fresno State stay within striking distance. Still, UCSD closed the half on a 12–6 run to take a 42–30 advantage into the locker room.
Fresno State came out energized after the break, tightening up defensively and using transition opportunities to chip away at the deficit. Back-to-back buckets from DeShawn Gory and Zaon Collins sparked an 11–2 run that cut UCSD's lead to 50–48 with just under 12 minutes to play.
The Bulldogs continued to pressure the Tritons, forcing 12 turnovers in the second half that led to 21 points, but UCSD answered each push with timely perimeter shooting. Beath buried his fifth three-pointer with under two minutes remaining to stretch the Triton lead to six, and Fresno State couldn't convert on a pair of late possessions to close the gap.
