McCarthy era opens with win against Sunbirds

FRESNO, Calif.- The Fresno State women's basketball team defeated Fresno Pacific in the season opener, 87-38, at the Save Mart Center on Monday night and Ryan McCarthy earns his first win as head coach.Â
Bulldogs were led by four in double-digits in the season opener with Danae Powell and Jasia Gamble scoring 18 apiece followed by freshman Ava Marr with 15 and Emilia Long collecting 14 points.Â
How it happenedÂ
Fresno State dominated from the opening tip as Djessira Diawara claimed the first basket of the night. The buckets kept flowing as the Bulldogs hit a 9-0 scoring run. Sunbirds tallied up another three points to stay stagnant at six for the reminder of the first quarter.Â
Fresno State continued to run rampant on the Sunbirds holding them scoreless for the entirety of the second quarter off a 21-0 scoring run. Powelll marked nine points in the scoring run to build the 'Dogs lead to 36 points.Â
Fresno Pacific showed life in the third quarter, outscoring the 'Dogs 21-19. The Bulldogs' silenced any Sunbird momentum with Marr knocking down a pair of threes while Diawara controlled the boards. Fresno State sat comfortably in front 61–27 lead heading into the final period.
