Late surge not enough to take down Matadors

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. – Fresno State put together one of its strongest offensive performances of the season but came up just short in a back-and-forth battle at CSUN, falling 89–87 on Wednesday night at Premier America Credit Union Arena.
The Bulldogs (6–5) knocked down 13 three-pointers, shot 50 percent from the field, and had four players score in double figures. Zaon Collins led Fresno State with a team-high 24 points, while Deshawn Gory added 19. Jake Heidbreder chipped in 15, and Wilson Jacques recorded a 10-point, 10-rebound double-double.
Despite the Bulldogs outscoring CSUN 50–42 in the second half, a late Matadors bucket in the final seconds ultimately sealed the two-point decision.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Fresno State opened the night firing from deep, with Collins, Cameron Faas, and Heidbreder each hitting early threes to give the Bulldogs an initial 9–4 edge. The two teams traded baskets throughout a fast-paced first half that featured six ties and seven lead changes.
After falling behind 45–26 with just over four minutes to play in the opening period, Fresno State surged back with an 11–2 run, highlighted by a Faas three, Collins' free throws, and a Heidbreder triple, to cut the deficit to 47–37 at halftime.
The Bulldogs carried that momentum into the second half. Gory's and-one finish opened the period, and the Bulldogs continued to chip away as Jacques scored on consecutive possessions to bring Fresno State within two at 49–47.
The teams continued to trade baskets, with Jacques, Collins and Gory each finishing at the rim to eventually tie the game at 59–59 with just under 14 minutes remaining. Fresno State took its first second-half lead moments later when Heidbreder converted in transition.
In the closing minutes, Collins repeatedly attacked downhill, and Gory drilled clutch perimeter shots to keep the Bulldogs within striking distance. Fresno State trailed by just one possession through nearly the entire final stretch and had multiple chances to tie or take the lead, but CSUN answered each push and converted late.
Despite outscoring the Matadors by eight in the second half, the Bulldogs' final look with under five seconds left did not fall, resulting in the narrow 89–87 finish.
