FRESNO, Calif. – The Fresno State softball team opened the Fresno State Kickoff Classic with a 6-1 win over LMU, on Friday night at Margie Wright Diamond.
The Bulldogs (2-4) outhit the Lions (1-6) 7-2, marking the fewest hits by an opponent this season. Junior left-handed pitcher Serayah Neiss earned the start in the circle, going 5.1 innings to secure her first win of the season. Sophomore right-handed pitcher Faith Jordan came in relief, recording the first save of her career.Â
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
LMU took the early lead with a sacrifice fly. Fresno State went down in order in the bottom half of the inning, but that would be short-lived as the Bulldogs' offense quickly came to life.
The Bulldogs nearly broke things open in the second as they got the bases loaded but a two-out fielder's choice ended the inning.
After Serayah Neiss ended the top of the third with back-to-back strikeouts, Madison Rey leveled the game with a one-out shot over the left field wall, the first home run of her career.
Alyssa Orr started the fourth inning for Fresno State with a leadoff triple that was just out of reach of the left fielder's glove. Taryn Irigoyen found the gap in the left side to bring Orr home. After stealing second and advancing to third on a sacrifice bunt, Irigoyen scored off an RBI ground out from Marissa Montelongo. Â
The top of the fifth saw Neiss send the Lions down in order for the second straight inning. Natalie Elias singled to open the bottom half of the inning. After two batters came to the plate, she was standing on third, Lauren Almeida dropped down a sacrifice bunt to give the Bulldogs a 4-1 lead.
Fresno State tacked on two more runs in the sixth. Rey had a short hopper that spun away from the LMU pitcher to bring in Kiara Sipe from third. After advancing to third on the play, Elias scored her second run of the night as Rey was caught in a run down.
