ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The Fresno State women's tennis team quickly grabbed their third conference win of the season against New Mexico on Friday afternoon, 4-1. The match lasted a total of two hours and twenty minutes, the fastest match of the season.
How it Happened
Fresno State hopped on the point first from the doubles win. First time doubles pair Eliza Dunbar and Gianna Mastro wrapped up first with a win. The pair defeated Matsoukatidi/ Taborga six games to one. Matilde Magrini and Paulina Montiel closed in quickly for the point, also defeating their opponents six games to one.
Three Bulldogs claimed their first sets to get working on singles points. Sofia Pizzoni returned to the singles lineup after the last two matches, to take the first set, 6-2. Â Andjela Lopicic owned the first set on a clean sweep as Dunbar won the first set, 6-3. Magrini dropped the first set in a tiebreaker, 6(5)-7.
Charlotte Gisclon pushed for the third set after holding a 6-2 advantage over Gaines in the second. Pizzoni grabbed her 11th singles win of the season with a straight two-set win over O'Connor at No. 2 (6-2, 6-4).
New Mexico got on the board after Sodre defeated Montiel on court five (6-1, 7-5).
Bulldogs were closing in on their third conference win this season, looking for Gisclon or Dunbar to call match. Dunbar found herself tied at three games to start the second set. Gisclon began her third set down three games. Gisclon pushed for two straight games then found herself tied at four games. Dunbar was on the edge of victory on court six and was Magrini, both 'Dogs at five games.
Dunbar earned the final point for the Bulldogs on court six, defeating Taborga in straight sets (6-3, 6-4).
