PROVO, Utah – The Fresno State softball team fell to BYU 7-4 on Monday afternoon at Gail Miller Field.
The Bulldogs (26-17) were outhit in the 10-4 by the Cougars (26-12) in the contest. Freshman Kiara Sipe led the team at the plate going 2-for-3 with two RBIs.
HOW IT HAPPENED
BYU took a 1-0 lead in the first inning thanks to a solo home run. The Cougars added to their lead in the second inning with back-to-back singles, putting two runners on. A sacrifice bunt advanced both into scoring position. An RBI single then brought home the runner from third. The runner on first stole second, giving BYU two runners in scoring position with one out. The next batter hit a fly ball to right field, and the runner on third attempted to tag up. However, Alyssa Orr had a great throw to the plate, and catcher Kennedy Bunker made the tag to end the inning.
Fresno State trimmed the deficit in the fourth. Kiara Sipe notched the Bulldogs' first hit of the game with a one-out single. Alyssa Orr was hit by a pitch, and a fielder's choice put runners on the corners. A passed ball on a strikeout allowed Sipe to score from third, cutting the lead in half.
In the bottom of the third, BYU extended its lead to 4-1 with a two-run home run.
Fresno State responded in the top of the fourth, tying the game with a three-run rally on two hits. After the first two batters were retired on groundouts, Alyssa Ramirez drew a walk, and a strikeout combined with a defensive error allowed another runner to reach base. With two on, Sipe came through with a two-RBI double to left field. Orr followed with an RBI single to even the score.
BYU reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the sixth, plating three runs on a pair of home runs to take a 7-4 advantage into the seventh inning.
The Bulldogs were sent down in order in the top of the seventh, falling to the Cougars 7-4.
