Bulldogs' season comes to an end in MW Championship game

SAN DIEGO – The Fresno State softball team (37–20) saw its season come to an end in the 2025 Credit Union 1 Mountain West Softball Championship, falling to San Diego State in a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at SDSU Softball Stadium.
The Bulldogs finished as tournament runner-up, with the Aztecs taking both games by a score of 3–1. It marks Fresno State's best finish in the postseason tournament. Serayah Neiss, Taryn Irigoyen, and Alyssa Orr were named to the Mountain West All-Tournament Team.
HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME ONE
Fresno State outhit SDSU 4-2 in game one. Emma Martinez led the 'Dogs going 2-for-3 at the plate. Two pitchers saw time in the circle. Serayah Neiss chalked the start with Key-annah Campbell-Pu'a coming in relief.
Cellura and the SDSU defense retired the first nine Fresno State batters in order.
The Aztecs extended their lead to 3-0 in the bottom of the third. The leadoff batter drew a walk, and a botched throw on a sacrifice bunt put runners on the corners with no outs. A triple to center field drove in both runners, and a fielder's choice brought home the third run.
The Bulldogs didn't go down without a fight. In the sixth inning, Martinez led off with a double to right-center, and Montelongo advanced her to third with a sacrifice bunt. A fielding error by the second baseman allowed Martinez to score and Natalie Elias to reach base. Bunker followed with a single through the right side, and a walk later loaded the bases with two outs. However, the next batter lined out to right field to end the inning.
With one inning left to mount a comeback and clinch the Mountain West Tournament title, Fresno State saw its first two batters retired in the seventh. Martinez kept the Bulldogs' hopes alive with a single to right field, but the Aztecs secured the final out to seal the win, to force a winner-take-all game.
HOW IT HAPPNED – GAME TWO
The Aztecs outhit the Bulldogs 8-6 in game two. Lauren Almeida went 2-for-3 at the plate. Three pitchers saw time in the circle.
SDSU took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. The leadoff batter drew a walk, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt, and stole third. The next batter then hit an RBI double to left-center field, driving in the run.
The Aztecs added to their lead in the second. The leadoff hitter doubled to right-center, advanced to third on a groundout, and attempted to score on a fielder's choice during the next at-bat. However, Emma Martinez threw home, and Kennedy Bunker applied the tag for the out. After a single and a walk, SDSU loaded the bases. The next batter delivered a 2-RBI double down the right-field line. The inning ended when the runner at third tried to steal home but was thrown out by Bunker.
After Aztecs' pitcher Cece Cellura and the defense retired seven straight batters, the Bulldogs threatened in the fifth, loading the bases with two hits and a walk. However, SDSU escaped the jam without allowing a run.
