BOISE, ID - The Fresno State women's basketball fell in a tight contest with Boise State on Wednesday night at ExtraMile Arena, 60-52. Avery Watkins collected her second double-double of the season with 12 points and 10 rebounds, to lead the 'Dogs in both categories for the night.Â
How it happenedÂ
Fresno got started on a 5-2 lead in the opening minutes with Danae Powell's three-point shot and a jumper from Jaisa Gamble. Boise State stretched to a slight lead, till Emilia Long got the 'Dogs back up with two shots from the line. Fresno State sat back within two after Indiya Clarke put up another shot from the charity stripe, 12-10.Â
An 8-0 run would put the Broncos ahead by six mid-way through the second quarter, 22-14. Avery Watkins then snapped the 'Dogs three minute drought to set the 'Dogs in motion to finish with the lead. The 'Dogs scoring run put a halt on the Broncos forcing them to shoot 0-of-7 from the field and play through a near three minute drought. Fresno State responded with a 12-2 run of their own with Watkins, Long and Morelia Chavez producing points, 26-24.Â
Clarke picked up a steal early and the Bulldogs briefly kept things even at 26 a piece. Boise State built a rhythm from the perimeter with a trio of three-pointers but Fresno State continued to answer at the rim. Watkins finished through contact to pull the Bulldogs within one at, 29–28. Chavez later knocked down a triple and Powell hit another to close the period. The 13-point period kept Fresno State within striking distance, 46-39.Â
Bulldogs continued to battle in the fourth quarter, cutting the deficit to six after back-to-back fast-break layups from Powell and Gamble midway through the frame. Fresno State remained aggressive, scoring eight points in the paint and forcing key turnovers, but Boise State closed the game at the free-throw line to secure the win.
