Bulldogs shutdown Sunbirds to open spring

FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State women's tennis team opened the spring season in dominating fashion sweeping the Sunbirds on Friday afternoon at the Fig Garden Swim & Racquet Club, 7-0. Â
How it happenedÂ
Fresno State got in on the points first, taking doubles. Andjela Lopicic and Sofia Pizzoni called the game first, taking down Fresno Pacific's Munoz/ Faherty, 6-1. The point was clinched with Eliza Dunbar and Louna Cormier on a six to two game win. Gianna Mastro and Paulina Montiel played their doubles match on court one. The pair were within reach down four games to five but the Sunbirds pulled out the final game.Â
The backend courts got to work right away to grab points for Fresno State. The first three singles matches of the day were done in straight sets. Freshman 'Dogs Cormier made her debut well sweeping Palomera on court six and held the Sunbird to zero games in the second set. Dunbar closed in on the point next at the fourth singles flight. Dunbar allowed her opponent to win a single game in the match during the second set, 6-0, 6-1. Montiel gave the Bulldogs their four-point lead with straight set wins over Faherty in the top three singles flight.Â
Mastro played a hard set match on court five forcing a tiebreaker game on a 6-2 second set win. The senior, Mastro secured the win on a 10-5 game. In the top singles flight this season, Pizzoni also played to a tie break set. The Fologio native dropped the second set (0-6) but earned the win with a 10-6 score. Lopicic was the last 'Dog on the court fighting in a tiebreaker set after winning the set, six games to three. Lopicic pulled out the win for the team with a 10-0 tie breaker game.Â
Up next: Fresno State (1-0) is back in their home court at Spalding G. Wathen on Saturday, Jan. 24 to host Santa Clara at 1 p.m. PT.Â
