'Dogs take down Broncos in home opener

FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State women's tennis team collected their third straight win to open the season on Wednesday, defeating Santa Clara by a final of 6-1 in their home opener at the Spalding G. Wathen Tennis Complex.Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Bulldogs secured the doubles point to open the match. Louna Cormier and Andjela Lopicic claimed the first doubles win on court two against Santa Clara's Boyer/Rahman, 6-4. On court 3, Eliza Dunbar and Sofia Pizzoni battled back from a 3-0 deficit to win the match by a score of 6-4, clinching the doubles point for the 'Dogs.Â
Paulina Montiel wasted no time grabbing the first singles point for the 'Dogs in decisive fashion, defeating Lizanne Boyer in straight sets by identical scores, 6-1, 6-1. Andjela Lopicic followed suit to extend the Bulldogs lead to 3-0, defeating her opponent in two sets, 6-2, 6-3. On court six, Klara Vukicevic sealed the victory for Fresno State. Opening with a 6-3 win in the first set, Vuckicevic fought hard after building a 5-1 lead in the second set to win by a final of 6-3, despite a late push by Santa Clara's Juliette Krumholz.Â
After dropping the opening set on court five, Louna Cormier bounced back with 6-4 win in set two before clinching Fresno State's fifth straight point of the afternoon in a tiebreaker set, 10-4. Santa Clara captured their first point of the match on court one after Sofia Pizzoni fell to Daniella Dimitrova after forcing a tiebreaker set that ended in a 10-8 defeat. On court 4, the final point of the afternoon was claimed by Eliza Dunbar. Following a 6-2 loss in the first set, Dunbar came back with a convincing 6-2 win in set two before taking the final set, 6-3, helping Fresno State earn a 6-1 win in their home opener.
