SAN JOSE, Calif. – The Fresno State men's basketball team earned its first Mountain West victory of the season on Tuesday night, defeating San Jose State 70-55 at Provident Credit Union Event Center.
The Bulldogs led from the opening minutes and never allowed the Spartans to threaten, improving to 7-8 overall and picking up their first win away from home this season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Fresno State set the tone early by attacking the paint and forcing turnovers, jumping out to a 15-9 lead less than five minutes into the game. Cameron Faas knocked down a pair of early three-pointers, while DeShawn Gory controlled the glass as the Bulldogs pushed the pace in transition.
A 13-2 Fresno State run midway through the first half extended the lead to double digits. The Bulldogs' defensive pressure led to fast-break opportunities, capped by back-to-back finishes from Gory and a corner three from Faas that made it 22-9. Fresno State continued to build separation behind balanced scoring and strong ball movement, taking a 37-24 advantage into halftime.
San Jose State attempted to respond out of the break, but Fresno State answered each push. The Bulldogs opened the second half with inside scoring from Wilson Jacques and Zaon Collins to maintain control. Fresno State continued to dominate the paint and the boards, using second-chance points and steady execution to keep the Spartans at arm's length.
The Spartans trimmed the deficit to single digits midway through the half, but timely baskets from Collins and David Douglas Jr., along with another strong stretch from Gory, halted the momentum. Fresno State closed the final minutes with composure at both ends, securing the 70-55 road win.
