Greetings loyal readers! Before beginning any of my normal rants on life, telling anecdotal tidbits on foreign countries, or quoting song lyrics from the 80's, I am humbled to issue a SINCERE thank you!!! Por que you may ask??? I have recently been informed by the person directly responsible for the creation of this blog, Women's Basketball Sports Information Director Steve Schaack, that we currently have the honor of being the most read blog on gobulldogs.com!

As I ponder how long it will take the committee from Nobel to take notice and bestow deserving trophies and accolades, I am saddened by the recent news that Steve Schaack, the aforementioned innovator of "Just Being Frank" will be departing Fresno State for an Assistant Athletic Director position at Idaho State. Steve and his family have been a blessing to our program and we will miss them immensely! We wish you all the best and look forward to seeing you on the road in Boise and Logan!

Just Being Frank: I Come From the Land Down Under

Pop and Rock fans of the 80's probably remember Colin Hay of Men at Work singing of vegemite sandwiches in a place where women glow and men plunder. Contrary to the belief of some, Australia is a bit more than "g'day"s" and "Shrimp on the barbies." In fact, there are a plethora of fun facts about Australia that probably go unnoticed. For example, no part of the country is more than 621 miles from the ocean or a beach. Conversely, the Australian Alps, also known as the Snowy Mountains, receive more snow than Switzerland. Australia is home to the largest cattle ranch (station) in the world at 30,028 sq. kilometers, roughly the size of the entire country of Belgium.

You see, it's not the name that makes the player, but the player that makes the name. Throughout the life of this blog, I've been questioned several times about which player is which, how they got their nickname, what does the nickname mean, etc. Well peeps, welcome to the first annual "What's in a Name" blog. Today's writings will deal with the who's who of the women's basketball program and how you can stay "in the 'No" with the nickname references of your favorite player. *

Just Being Frank: On The Road Again

So here we are again, time for the newest update on all things Fresno State Women's Basketball . . .

July has arrived and Willie Nelson is the inspiration for the latest segment of "Just Being Frank." Several things could come to mind when thinking of one of the all-time greatest country crooners in American Music history. Long hair, headbands, and his iconic status in the world of going green, all while delivering some of the greatest ballads with Waylon, Johnny Cash, etc., come to mind for me. All these things are definitely Willie, but as I type this while in air- transit from Oregon City to Chicago, I keep thinking of the tune, "On the Road Again." What better way to express the joy and excitement of the July evaluation period than reciting the lyrics:

Here is the third edition of "Just Being Frank" from women's basketball assistant coach Brett Frank.

Well folks . . . It's that time again! Let me knock the dust off my ol' PC and start banging out some words. Inspiration for this segment comes from a very close friend of mine (love ya JG!) who brought up Hall of Fame rocker Alice Cooper. As many of you loyal viewers of American Idol (AI) saw on the season finale, Cooper led off an amazing show filled with unbelievable talent!

author's note: Apologies go out to all you Mama Sox fans. I had to go with my boy Lee even though she out sang him on the final night of competition.

author's 2nd note: Love or hate the guy, I think we're all going to miss Simon!

author's 3rd note: I promise no more author's notes in this blog starting . . . . . NOW!

While not a diehard fan of Cooper, I do appreciate his ode to that age old cherished last day of classes ballad, "School's Out for Summer." While typing away, I just can't seem to get the lyrics of that song out of my head "No more pencils, No more books, No more teacher's dirty looks."

I began contemplating what goes on in the summer. Unless we're taking to the hardwood, most of you have no idea what makes up the days of our student-athletes and coaches outside of the traditional school year. Well that all ends today as I give you the official 2010 Bulldog Women's Basketball Fun in the Sun Summer Breakdown.

On May 21 final exams were concluded thus completing the Spring 2010 semester.

May 22, 2010 was a very special day as four Bulldog Women's Basketball players dressed in cap and gown, walked across the stage to the tune of "Pomp and Circumstance," and received their diploma! Congrats go out to Shay, JoJo, Lil B, and J!!!

Fresno State Continues to Set Standard of Excellence

Over the past eight seasons, the Western Athletic Conference has tracked the performance of each of its member schools through a race for an annual Commissioner's Cup based on the collective achievements in each of the 18 WAC-sponsored sports.

The concept is simple: each sport contributes a designated number of points based on the ranking of the sport in conference contests and/or WAC tournament competition.

Throughout this period, Fresno State has consistently demonstrated their drive for excellence, with back-to-back first-place finishes in the 2007-08 and 2008-09 academic years and an average finish of 2.375, by far the highest of any current WAC institution. The next closest competitors, Boise State and Nevada, have placed an average of 3.63 and 3.88, respectively, in Cup rankings over the eight seasons. Overall, the 'Dogs own a WAC-best 679.5 points for a clip of 84.94 points per academic year.

I was trying to determine what my loyal following wanted to read about. By the way, if you are reading this blog for the second time as my second entry, you're one of the people I'm referring to as my "loyal following."

I realized school is winding down and the "newsworthy" events of our women's basketball team are few and far between. Seeing as how many of you are not from Fresno (hereafter affectionately referred as "the 'No), I thought it would be fun to highlight this great community and all the wonderful things that go along with being in "the 'No.

Just Being Frank Begins

It's time to provide some insight into the Fresno State women's basketball program. To help us with that every other Friday assistant coach Brett Frank will give us snap shot of what is going on with the team throughout the course of the year in a series titled, "Just Being Frank."

The story goes like this . . . .

I was recently assigned a great and overwhelming task by our Sports Information Director, Steve Schaack. He requested I use my creative talent (a scary thought since there's very little of that to begin with) to begin a new blog for the women's basketball link on gobulldogs.com. Obviously, if you're reading this, you've successfully found it and my work is being rewarded as you scan and process each word.

Initially, I was torn on whether to talk about our past season or the season that lies in front of us. I thought maybe you would want to know more about the stars of the past season, or the newcomers that will be instrumental in building on our recent success. I thought of entertaining you with funny and anecdotal stories of trips on the road or of a gathering with Fresno State's Tim Anderson and the Fresno State band performing an impromptu concert for our team.

As I was desperately trying to find my groove, I realized that before I could dedicate myself to any of these ideas, I needed to have a title for the blog. "Brett's frets" took the early lead as I was terrified of not being able to ever figure out a direction to go with my assignment...
