A two-time NCAA national champion and four-time Academic All-Big Ten selection, Aaron Samarin enters his first year as an assistant coach for the Bulldogs.
After a season as the director of operations/technical coordinator for the Bulldogs in 2021, Samarin helped the 'Dogs tally 12 wins defeating both Mountain West regular season champion Colorado State and tournament champion Boise State in the regular season.
The Bulldogs went 8-4 at home, tied for seventh in the MW and finished 16th in the country in aces per set (1.85). Desiree Sukhov was tabbed All-MW honorable mention while freshman Ella Rud finished fourth among Bulldog freshman in program history with 30 service aces.
Samarin arrives at Fresno State from UC Merced where he was an assistant coach for the men’s program as the Golden Bobcats went 12-1 in 2020-21.
Samarin played libero for the Ohio State Buckeyes from 2015-19 and earned the 2018 Big Ten Sportsmanship award. During his time in Columbus, the Buchanan High School graduate (2014) finished 18th in program history in digs per set (1.61) and was a five-time OSU Scholar-Athlete as well as a five-time MIVA Academic All-Conference selection.
After his collegiate career, Samarin spent a year in the United Kingdom going to school and playing professionally for Durham Palatinate.
Samarin has coached a variety of levels over the recent years as he was the frosh/soph. head coach at Buchanan High School and for the Elite Beach Volleyball Indoor Club 16’s team. Samarin first gained coaching experience coaching at many camps in both the Fresno and Columbus, Ohio area. Also as a student athlete, Samarin spent numerous hours with seven-time NCAA national champion coach Kevin Burch learning Volleydata and VolleyMetrics, which will help Samarin in the coaching world.
Samarin holds a bachelor of science in Sport Industry from The Ohio State University (2018, cum laude), a master’s in Sports Management from The Ohio State University (2019) and a master’s of science in Business Management Entrepreneurship from Durham University (2020).
