Justin Hutchins is in his first year as the Bulldogs[apos] assistant coach after becoming a part of Lauren Netherby-Sewell[apos]s staff in March 2012. Hutchins works primarily with the Bulldog setters and middle blockers. His other duties include, recruiting, scouting and non-conference scheduling. In 2012, the Bulldogs saw their best season since 2004. The `Dogs finished the year 18-13 and in fourth place in their first season as Mountain West members. The season was highlighted by wins against the PAC-12[apos]s Colorado and MW volleyball powers Colorado State and Wyoming. Fresno State spent half the conference season among the top three in the MW standings before finishing in fourth. The Bulldogs also saw their best RPI score in the last eight seasons at the conclusion of the 2012 season. The `Dogs had an RPI score of 90, which is the best score since 2003 when Fresno State had an RPI score of 45. Two Bulldogs, Wild and Barbara Alcantara, earned MW Player of the Week awards. Alcantara became the first volleyball student-athlete to garner All-MW honors. Hutchins, a native of Simi Valley, Calif., most recently worked as an assistant coach at Cal Poly for two seasons prior to joining the [apos]Dogs volleyball coaching staff. Hutchins has a 12-year coaching career under his belt, including a three-season stint at Utah Valley University (2005-2006, 2008) as the technical advisor, defensive systems coordinator and recruiter for the Wolverines. He spent the 2007-08 season as a volunteer assistant for BYU men[apos]s program. In addition, Hutchins spent seven years as the co-owner and director of Club Utah Volleyball, helping his teams to numerous regional championships and Junior Olympics qualifications. He also coached 805 Elite, a club team in San Luis Obispo, for two seasons. Hutchins[apos] coaching background includes a decade-long association with the renowned Gold Medal Squared Volleyball Camps and Clinics, where in dispersing the organization[apos]s training philosophies and methodologies, he served in various coaching and administrative capacities such as a clinician, lead camp coach and employee recruiter. Hutchins played four years of college volleyball himself. He transferred from Golden West College in Huntington Beach, where he served as a captain and a starter, to UVU to play for the men[apos]s club team. Hutchins helped lead Utah Valley to a Division I NIRSA national championship in 2001 and a third-place finish in 2002. He is married to the former Shannon Hermansen and they have a daughter, Davis (3) and a son, Grayson, born in June 2012.
