Three Women Tennis Players Battle in St. Mary's Tournament

FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State?s Kelly Ramirez (Fr., Ontario, Calif.) reached the semifinals and Chantel Wiggins (So., Fresno, Calif.) and Jennifer Messmer (Sr., Camarillo, Calif.) won several matches at the St. Mary?s Tournament in Moraga, Calif., Oct. 15-17.
Ramirez, the No. 1 seeded player in the tournament, had a bye to the second round where she defeated Nikki Kobayashi of Wyoming in straight sets 6-0, 6-1. She next faced Pacific?s Alison Dohman and moved on to the quarterfinals by winning 6-3, 6-1. In the quarterfinals, she took on teammate Chantel Wiggins, the No. 5 seed. Ramirez moved on to the semifinals by defeating Wiggins 7-6 (11), 7-6 (2). In the semis, Ramirez fell to Marta Zivanov of San Jose State 6-3, 7-5.
Wiggins? road had her matched up against Aaryn Volkmann of San Francisco, whom she defeated 6-2, 6-1. In the second round, Wiggins defeated San Jose State?s Caroline Stenman 2-6, 6-1, 7-5. Nicole McCord of Santa Clara was her Wiggins' next victim. She defeated her 6-3, 4-6, 6-1 before losing to Ramirez.
Messmer had a first round matchup against Sacramento State?s Ada McDonagh, winning 6-0, 6-1. She was then ousted from the tournament, losing to Loyola Marymount?s Penka Fileva 4-6, 6-3, 6-1.
