Women's Tennis Ousted from Riviera Tournament

FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State?s Liesl Fichtbauer and Kim Niggemeyer lost in the qualifying round at the Riviera Women?s All-American Championships in Los Angeles, Calif. on Oct. 20. In the first round, Fichtbauer defeated Becky Varnum of Notre Dame 6-2, 6-3 and then turned around in the afternoon to defeat Pepperdine?s Dorothee Kurz 6-1, 6-2. In trying to qualify for the main draw, Fichtbauer?s run was ended by the No. 2 seed in the qualifying tournament Jacqui Boyd of USC 7-6 (4), 7-6 (4). "Liesl played with a lot of heart throughout this tournament especially in the rough two straight set tiebreaker losses to Boyd," Fresno State?s Women?s Head Coach Corbin Archer said. Niggemeyer started her first round with a close win to Mauren Haus of Wake Forest 6-3, 2-6, 7-5, she was then ousted from the tournament losing to Pepperdine?s Ipek Senoglu 6-3, 6-2. Women?s tennis will host their annual Bulldog classic at the Spalding G. Wathen Tennis Center on Oct. 29-31. The Riviera Women?s All-American Championship?s main draw will take place Oct. 21-24 and it is considered the second collegiate women?s grand slam. A total of 54 schools from around the country are participating in this years event.
