Fresno, Calif. - Freshman Zach Minor went the distance for his third victory of the year as the Bulldogs defeated St. Mary's 8-2 at Beiden Field. Fresno State is back to .550 for the first time in two months at 25-25.
The Bulldogs opened the scoring in the bottom of the first as Joe Gerber got things started when his third strike bounced in the dirt, allowing him to get to first. The rightfielder would move up to second when freshman Tom Creighton was hit by a pitch. After leftfielder Anthony Acevedo grounded into a double play, Gerber scored the first run of the game on a single by third baseman Nick Garcia. Garcia went 2-4, extending his multi-hit hitting streak to seven games.
Fresno State's lead would only last for a half inning as the Gaels scored their first run in the top of the second. St. Mary's would go ahead in the next inning with another run off Minor.
The Bulldogs would tied the game in the third, then take then take the lead for good in the fourth. With one out in the fourth, designated hitter Jeff Prieto hit a triple to right field. The next batter, centerfielder Tony Guzman, grounded out to the short stop, but scored Prieto.
The Diamond 'Dogs added four insurance runs in the fifth inning, many thanks in part to the St. Mary's pitching staff. Between three Gaels pitcher, they walked three batters, hit one batter and threw one wild pitch. The big blow in the inning came when Acevedo doubled to left field to score two runs.
Fresno State will be back in action on Friday as it starts a three-game series with San Diego State. The Bulldogs will be back at Beiden Field on Thursday, April 29, when they play host to BYU.
