Bulldog Softball Sweeps WAC Player of the Week Honors

Fresno, Calif. - For the second time this season, Fresno State swept WAC Player of the Week honors with junior first baseman Angela Cervantez (Madera) and senior right hander Lindsay Parker (Glendale) garnering player and pitcher honors, respectively. Batting .542 (13-24) in a current seven-game hitting streak, Cervantez hit .529 (9-17) with seven RBI, four runs, three doubles, one triple, and two walks in five games last week. Helping the Bulldogs to a three-game sweep over San Jose State, the two-time WAC Player of the Week pick this season batted .556 (5-9) with three runs, two doubles, three RBI, two walks and had seven total bases for a .778 slugging percentage against the Spartans. Against Loyola Marymount, Cervantez went 4-8 at the plate (.500) with one run, a double, a triple, four RBI and seven total bases for a .875 slugging percentage. Parker, also garnering her second pitcher of the week accolades this season, went 2-0 with 24 strikeouts in 14.0 innings last week. Giving up one earned run (0.50 ERA), Parker struck out 13 Spartans -- tying a career-high -- and 11 Loyola Marymount Lions to improve her overall record to 9-0 on the season. Parker has now struck out 10 or more batters for the fifth straight game in as many starts. She also has fanned 59 batters in the last 33.1 innings for an average of 12.48 strikeouts per seven innings.
With an 18-game Western Athletic Conference win streak and a school-record 20-game overall win streak, Fresno State concludes its seven-game homestand with Pacific in a non-conference doubleheader on Tuesday, April 20, 6:00 pm. The Bulldogs and UOP have not met each other since 1993. Fresno State, which holds a 59-14-1 series lead, has captured the last 28 straight meetings since 1987. In 1986, the 'Dogs dropped the first meeting to the Tigers, 1-0, and then played to a 2-2 tie in the night cap at home.
Fresno State and San Diego State will square off this weekend with a WAC doubleheader on Saturday, April 24, 1:00 pm, and a single game on Sunday at 1:00 pm. The Bulldogs and SDSU met earlier this season at the Kia Klassic in Fullerton with the 'Dogs capturing a 2-0 win; that victory gave head coach Margie Wright her 700th win at Fresno State. Holding a 40-5 series lead, Fresno State has won the last five and 26 of the last 27.
1999 WAC Softball Tournament in Fresno Sponsoring its third WAC Softball Championship Tournament, the WAC will host the 1999 softball championship, May 13-15, at Bulldog Diamond. Six WAC teams will compete in the championship tournament with the winner receiving the NCAA automatic bid. Tournament passes will go on sale to the general public on Monday, April 26. Reserved and third base riser single day tickets, if available, will go on sale the day of the game. General admission day tickets will go on sale Monday, May 10.
