FRESNO, Calif. - Terrance Roberson scored a career-high 28 points to lead Fresno State past San Jose State 57-52 in a Western Athletic Conference game, Thursday night.
Fresno State (16-7 overall, 6-2 WAC) struggled against San Jose State's slow tempo most of the game but pulled away in the final five minutes for the win.
Fresno's Demetrius Porter scored all 11 of his points in the final five minutes, including four straight free throws when San Jose coach Phil Johnson was hit with two technicals and ejected.
Michael Quinney, who led San Jose State (11-10, 4-4) with 21, buried a 3-pointer with just over four minutes left in the game, cutting Fresno's lead to 43-41.
Roberson countered with a long three a minute later, moments before Johnson was hit with two quick technicals. After Porter made all four free throws, San Jose State never got closer than five points the rest of the game.
San Jose State was content to hold the ball near halfcourt until less than 20 seconds remained on the 35-second shot clock before going into its offense. And the Spartans were able to stay close by dominating the boards with a 39-27 advantage. San Jose had 16 offensive boards and Will Trawick pulled down a game high 18 rebounds.
Courtney Alexander added 12 points for the Bulldogs, who came into the game averaging 82 points.
San Jose State took an early 8-3 lead on a pair of 3-point baskets by Quinney in the first four minutes. But the Bulldogs came right back with a 9-2 run to take the lead with just less than nine minutes left in the half.
Roberson buried a 3-point basket and added two free throws in the final 1:21 of the half to give Fresno State a 20-16 halftime lead.
Fresno State was without starting point guard Chris Herren, who missed the game because of illness. Herren is averaging 14 points per game for the Bulldogs.
